Chapter Ten: Welcome to Paradise

The sun is starting to set behind us as we continue flying east. For the past several hours, it has been nothing but a vast blue ocean beneath us and clear skies above. I look up at Alexander and Pagos who aren’t too far ahead. Alexander is the only person I know that can sleep comfortably on a cold rock, so it’s no surprise that he’s sleeping on the back of Pagos as she flies through the air.

It’s at that time I start to feel the tension in my neck and back, so I lay down on the back of Fotia’. The air begins to grow colder as the day grows darker. It’s not long before everything turns completely dark. The only light I can see comes from the stars that are already showing in the clear night sky. The moon seems to be in hiding for the time being, but I have a feeling that it will be shining soon.

I close my eyes and let my mind wander. All my thoughts are on our destination and for some reason, I can’t stop wondering what it will be like. “What is this place that has been hidden from mankind since the dawn of time itself? Who are these people that can die but never do? How can Fotia’ and Pagos know the way if they’ve never been there before?”

I hear a distant voice calling my name from the darkness and I quickly sit up to look around. “Alexander?” “Dia, come back to me,” the voice whispers. I can’t see a thing other than Fotia’s wings flapping up and down. I look for Alexander and Pagos, but they’re nowhere to be found. “Dia, you and I are meant to be together. Come back to me.” A chill sends goosebumps all over me and somehow, I recognize the voice in the distance. It’s the black ghost. “What do you want with me?” I ask in a fearful voice. “I’m not your sister. Please, just leave me alone!”

Suddenly, I feel a forceful wind from above and a long arm with a pale white hand reaches down and grabs ahold of me. I look up as the hand clutches my wrist and see the black ghost riding on the back of Pagos. “Let go of me! Alexander, wake up! Let go of me!” I fight to free myself from his grip by kicking at the air and digging my fingernails into his cold clammy pale white skin. “Fotia’, help me!”

Suddenly I’m free of his grip and I look down to see that Fotia’ has flown on without me. I start falling into the darkness below and screaming for help. “Oh, please let this be a dream.” I keep falling, trying to look around for some sign that I’m dreaming, but everything is too real. “This isn’t a dream.” Before long, I can see the moon’s reflection on the ocean’s surface and I only have a matter of seconds before I’m splattered against it.
